The USDA Grain Transportation Report shows third-quarter 2019 wheat transport costs rising from Kansas and North Dakota to Japan, mainly on higher rail and ocean rates. Farm values fell, so total landed costs dropped quarter over quarter.
Rising ocean and rail freight raises the cost of moving US wheat to export markets, which can narrow basis and export competitiveness. Falling farm values partly offset this in landed-cost terms.
