The Brazilian real fell below 4.35 per dollar for the first time on February 12, a fourth straight record low, with year-to-date losses near 8%. Weaker-than-expected December retail sales, the first decline in eight months, added to pressure from speculative selling and dollar hedging demand.
A weaker real makes Brazilian soybean and corn exports cheaper in dollar terms, which can encourage farmer selling and pressure global soymeal and corn prices.
