The euro rallied to a more than two-month high near 1.11 against the dollar following news of a 750 billion euro EU recovery fund. Euro-area new virus cases were easing while US cases remained elevated, and US unemployment claims reached about 40 million since the crisis began.
A downward revision to US Q1 GDP and weak durable goods orders also weighed on the dollar.
A weaker dollar and firmer euro typically support dollar-priced commodities and make US exports more competitive in euro terms. The divergence in recovery paths between the US and Europe is a key driver for near-term currency moves.
