Philippine farmers' group FFF says farmgate palay prices have fallen to as low as P16 per kilogram as traders anticipate a flood of imports. Rice imports for the first eight months of the year fell 25% year on year to 1.66 million tonnes, and national inventories were down 16%.
Traders are discounting domestic palay in anticipation of future imports, which signals weak Philippine demand for milled rice in the near term. Import expectations weigh on Asian rice prices.
