The Baltic Exchange sea-freight index rose three straight weeks, with capesize and panamax rates reaching their highest since September 2019. The panamax index hit its highest level since September 2010 as buyers scrambled to cover grain and coal shipments.
Record-high panamax rates raise the cost of shipping Australian grain to Asia and other markets, eroding export competitiveness and increasing landed feed costs. Buyers with uncovered forward business face higher delivered prices.
