Dry-bulk ship queues at ports reached a record of about 142 million dwt, with China accounting for more than a third and Chinese congestion hitting an all-time high of 52.7 million dwt. Capesize rates rose above $47,000 per day, and the Baltic supramax index passed $35,000 per day for the first time since 2015, with grain ships affected as Chinese silos are full.
Port congestion in China delays grain and oilseed deliveries and idles about 16% of the dry-bulk fleet, tightening vessel supply and raising freight costs. Full Chinese grain silos limit import capacity, which can weigh on demand for imported feed grains.
