India has allowed its first-ever imports of genetically modified soybean meal, with about 1.5 million tonnes expected to arrive within roughly 10 days to ease a severe domestic shortage. Importers say world soymeal prices are about 40% below domestic Indian prices, and Bangladesh may serve as a transshipment point for one company.
Large Indian GM soymeal imports add significant import demand into a tight market, supporting world soymeal prices, though the wide domestic-world price gap makes the import pull strong.
