Oat futures have risen sharply, with prices up about 87% year to date as of December 22, 2021, the largest gain among major commodities that year. Drought in the western US has cut the 2021 harvest by roughly 40% from the prior year.
Demand is also rising as emerging-market consumers eat more meat, and oats are widely used as livestock feed.
A 40% smaller US oat crop against steady demand tightens supplies for feed buyers and supports higher oat prices. Buyers relying on oats for feed should expect continued cost pressure.
