The European Central Bank said it watches the euro exchange rate because of its effect on inflation, but does not target a specific level. The comment came as the currency reached parity with the US dollar for the first time in about 20 years.
Central bank reluctance to defend the euro suggests further currency weakness is possible, which supports the dollar and keeps dollar-denominated feed and grain prices under pressure.
