USDA NASS's July Cattle report showed 98.8 million head of cattle and calves on U.S. farms as of July 1, 2022, down 2% from a year earlier. Beef cows totaled 30.4 million, down 2%, and milk cows fell to 9.45 million.
A shrinking breeding herd tightens future beef and feeder cattle supplies, supporting higher cattle prices and a longer-term demand pull for feed grains is limited by the reduced cattle numbers.
