NASS reported U.S. cattle and calves at 89.3 million head as of January 1, 2023, down 3%. Beef cows totaled 28.9 million and the calf crop fell 2% to 34.5 million, while cattle on feed were down 4% to 14.2 million head.
Lower calf crop and cattle on feed reduce near-term slaughter supplies, which supports cattle prices and points to lower beef output over the next few years.
