USDA's annual Cattle Inventory Report showed total US cattle and calves fell 1% to 86.7 million head as of January 1, 2025. Beef cows fell 1% to 27.9 million, and cattle on feed were 14.3 million, down 1%.
The smallest herd in decades confirms tight beef supply, which supports cattle prices and keeps feeder and fed cattle values elevated.
