The Army Corps of Engineers has started construction on a new lock chamber at Lock and Dam #25 in Winfield, Missouri, the first of seven new locks planned on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Industry groups say the upgrade will cut barge lockage time from hours to about 30 minutes and save farmers around 1.5 cents per bushel per lock.
The project is multi-year and affects future logistics costs rather than near-term supply, so it has little immediate price impact but lowers long-run barge transport costs for Midwest grain.
