Mexico notified the WTO of a revised NOM-187 standard on July 28, 2023, opening a 60-day comment period. The proposal would ban genetically engineered corn in nixtamalized products for both domestic and imported goods, excluding snacks.
A ban on GE corn in nixtamalized products extends restrictions to imports and could limit US corn sales for tortilla and masa production, a bearish factor for corn export demand.
