India imposed a minimum export price on basmati rice to stop illegal exports of non-basmati white rice under basmati codes. Basmati exports still rose 8.2% in April-October 2023 to 2.61 million tonnes.
Basmati volumes are still growing despite the price floor, so the measure has limited effect on global rice supply and prices.
