China's central bank set the yuan midpoint at 7.0948 per dollar, about 1,311 pips stronger than Reuters' estimate of 7.2259, the widest gap since November 2023. The move follows the yuan's slide to a four-month low the prior Friday.
A stronger-than-expected fix signals Beijing is leaning against yuan weakness, which reduces the pressure for a sharp depreciation that would make US feed and oilseed exports pricier for Chinese buyers. Feed buyers should expect firmer Chinese import demand to be less pressured by currency moves.
