The PBOC set the yuan's daily fixing at 6.9929 per dollar, its strongest reference rate in nearly three years and the first time below 7 in that period. The move was the largest single-day strengthening since August.
A reference rate below 7 signals official tolerance for yuan appreciation, which can lower China's dollar-based import costs. Stronger yuan sentiment can marginally support Chinese demand for imported ag commodities.
