Wholesale egg prices rose above about $3 per dozen in August, up from the usual $1 to $2 range, while retail egg prices were up 19% year over year. Bird flu has left supplies less robust than normal, and US egg sales have climbed to levels not seen since the pandemic.
Tight layer supply and strong demand support egg prices, but heavy losses also reduce feed usage by the layer sector. Export demand for US eggs is also rising, adding to the market tightness.
