The BLS reported September grocery prices rose 0.4%, the largest monthly gain since January, with egg prices up 8.4% in the month and 39.6% year over year. Pork chops fell 1.2% in the month while milk declined 0.3%.
Rising retail food inflation, driven partly by avian flu-related egg costs, reflects tight protein supply and can shape consumer demand for meat and dairy.
