USDA data show US range and pasture conditions finished the May-October season with 51% rated poor or very poor, the highest of the year and well above last year's 37%. Ratings were worse in the Great Plains and Southern Plains, which pushed cattle off grass and into feedlots earlier than normal.
Feeder steer prices have held steady at roughly $250-280/cwt since the start of the year.
Poor pasture conditions push cattle into feedlots sooner, raising near-term grain demand while shrinking the grazing base. Poor pastures also support feeder cattle prices by limiting supply.
