The WFP's November 2024 El Niño situation report says more than 26 million people in Southern Africa are food insecure. Zambia and Zimbabwe show maize production down about 50% and 72% from the five-year average, and the region faces a sharp import need of about 5 million tonnes.
A large Southern African maize import requirement, around 5 million tonnes, could draw export supply from South America and the US, supporting corn prices and freight demand.
