The Brazilian real strengthened slightly to about 5.03 per USD in late May as the dollar softened and oil prices retreated on signs of a preliminary US-Iran understanding. Brazil's first-quarter GDP grew 1.1% quarter on quarter, stronger than expected and the fastest in a year.
A firmer real and easing oil prices reduce Brazilian feed and ethanol cost pressures in dollar terms, while higher-for-longer rate expectations support the currency and may keep domestic borrowing costs high for livestock and feed operators.
