A University of Maryland-led study tracked the spread of H5N1 bird flu in North America and found it is now killing wild birds previously unaffected and infecting poultry year-round. The researchers concluded the virus will likely become endemic and called for coordinated national and regional responses.
If H5N1 becomes endemic, recurring poultry losses could keep egg and poultry supply tight and raise production costs. This is a research finding rather than a new supply shock.
