Chinese officials have forced natural gas-powered fertilizer plants in areas like Sichuan and Yunnan to shut in order to divert gas to northern home heating. Urea prices in Shandong rose to a four-year high, and Chinese urea exports are expected to fall sharply to 4.3 million tonnes this year from 8.9 million in 2016.
Tighter Chinese urea supply removes a major export source from the global nitrogen market, supporting higher fertilizer costs for feed grain growers and suggesting higher Chinese corn planting costs next year.
