China has restricted fertiliser exports, banning shipments of nitrogen-potassium blends and certain phosphate varieties in mid-March. Only a handful of products such as ammonium sulphate can now be exported on top of existing urea bans and quotas.
Reuters estimates between half and three quarters of China's prior-year exports are now restricted, up to 40 million tons.
China is a major fertiliser exporter, and the loss of these tons on top of Hormuz disruption tightens global nitrogen and phosphate supply, supporting higher urea and phosphate prices that raise feed grain production costs.
