The May Cattle on Feed report showed 11.8 million head in feedlots on May 1, 2% above a year earlier and the highest May inventory since the series began in 1996. April placements exceeded 1.8 million head, up 9% year over year, and April marketings rose 8% to 1.93 million head.
A record May inventory and higher placements and marketings indicate ample feeder supplies, which weighs on cattle prices. Analysts called the report mostly friendly, so the impact may be limited.
