An IIASA study in Nature Climate Change examines the risk that simultaneous failures in global breadbaskets could cut wheat, maize and soybean output. It finds the risk of concurrent extremes, linked to phenomena such as ENSO, has changed over time.
The authors warn the global food system may not absorb such shocks.
The study highlights a tail risk to wheat, corn and soy supply that could support prices in a severe multi-region failure, but it is a research finding rather than a current crop event.
