A group of farmer-funded soybean and corn organizations offered $1 million to fund pre-engineering and design for Upper Mississippi Lock and Dam 25 in Winfield, Missouri. The offer followed Congress passing an infrastructure bill with $17.1 billion for ports and waterways.
Lock 25 has a single 600-foot chamber, which forces tows to be broken up and reformed, causing delays.
Lock delays raise barge transit times and costs for grain moving to Gulf export elevators. Progress on the project could ease bottlenecks over the long term, but the effect on near-term prices is limited.
