The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the end of the drought that has affected the Mississippi River basin since September 2022. Draft restrictions have been lifted, and dredges that kept the channel navigable are on standby.
Lifting barge draft restrictions lowers freight costs and improves reliability for grain moving down the Mississippi, which eases pressure on Gulf export basis for corn and soybeans.
