Researchers exposed yearling heifers to aerosolized H5N1 and inoculated virus into the teats of lactating cows. The infected cows showed few symptoms at first, while the later group developed reduced appetite, lower milk output and thick yellowish milk.
The findings show H5N1 can reduce milk production in dairy cows, which bears on dairy supply risk. The study alone does not change current milk price fundamentals.
