Stay-at-home orders and social distancing across the US are shifting how consumers buy beef and dairy. Futures and fed cattle prices fell to $105 to $112 live, while wholesale boxed beef Choice and Select cuts jumped more than $43 in the week of March 20.
CattleFax analyst Lance Zimmerman warned that food service losses will weigh on beef demand later in 2020.
Weaker expected beef demand and a divergence between cash cattle and boxed beef prices point to lower cattle values and potentially reduced feedlot placements, which pressure feed ingredient demand.
