Natural gas prices have fallen sharply from late-2018 highs near $4.80 per mmBtu to about $3 in early January. US storage ended December at 2,705 bcf, 560 bcf below the five-year average, but mild January weather eased supply pressure.
Utilities also cut gas-fired generation after the earlier price spike.
Mild weather and reduced gas burn for power generation weigh on near-term demand, even with storage well below normal. Prices could fall further unless cold returns.
