Nigeria’s Institute for Agricultural Research released three improved short-statured sorghum varieties for cultivation in communities affected by insecurity. The varieties were developed with support from FCDO and CIMMYT, and a participating farmer said they mature in less than four months.
Earlier-maturing varieties could help farmers produce sorghum despite shortened or disrupted growing seasons, potentially supporting local supply over time. Any price effect is likely limited initially as adoption and production scale are not stated.
