Peru’s production ministry authorized a scientific exploratory fishery for sardines, to be conducted by the marine research institute for up to 15 days. Researchers will assess the species’ distribution, size structure and reproductive condition to determine whether its recent presence is linked to El Niño or a broader change in distribution; the authorization does not open a commercial season or set a catch quota.
The survey is for research and does not directly add commercial supply, so there is no clear near-term price effect. Its results could inform future sardine management and availability.
