Teagasc-led research is evaluating heritage barley varieties preserved in Ireland’s national seed bank for potential use in brewing, distilling and food production. Researchers are reconstructing historical breeding records to identify distinctive qualities that could suit modern artisan or industrial markets; barley also remains an important Irish animal-feed crop.
If heritage varieties prove commercially viable, they could diversify barley end uses and support differentiated demand, though the research itself does not signal an immediate change in feed supply or prices.
