Egypt’s provisional net international reserves rose to $57.4998 billion at the end of October from $57.3482 billion at the end of September, an increase of $151.6 million. Separately, the Central Bank of Egypt raised its overnight deposit rate by 100 basis points to 20% and its lending rate to 21% on October 29.
Higher rates may support the pound and the reserve increase adds modestly to the country’s foreign-currency buffer, potentially easing import-cost pressure. The reserve change is small relative to the total stock and does not by itself establish that the central bank bought dollars in the market.
