The European Fat Processors and Renderers Association (EFPRA) called on EU regulators to allow processed animal proteins from ruminants in feed for non-ruminants, including farmed fish. The association estimates the change could make an additional 1.2 million tonnes of protein available annually, while maintaining safeguards for processing, traceability, and animal health.
If adopted, the reform could increase EU supplies of rendered protein and reduce reliance on imported plant proteins and constrained fishmeal. That could put downward pressure on fishmeal and alternative protein ingredient prices, while supporting meat-and-bone meal availability.
