Canada recorded a merchandise trade surplus of C$5.4 billion in September, while total export value rose 0.2% to a record C$78.6 billion. Export volumes fell 4%, and exports declined in eight of 11 product sections; energy and metal exports drove the increase in overall value.
The figures describe a weaker volume backdrop for Canadian goods exports, but do not identify a direct change in feed-commodity supply or demand. Higher energy export values reflect prices for crude oil and natural gas rather than increased export volumes.
