The European Fat Processors and Renderers Association called on EU regulators to revise feed rules to allow more processed ruminant animal proteins, including cattle- and sheep-derived proteins, in aquaculture feed. EFPRA estimates that the change could make an additional 1.2 million tonnes of protein available annually as aquaculture demand grows and conventional marine ingredients face supply constraints.
If regulations are relaxed, additional rendered animal protein could substitute for some fishmeal and ease pressure on constrained marine-protein supplies. The proposal could be bearish for fishmeal demand and prices, but the effect depends on EU approval and feed-sector adoption.
