Avian influenza has been detected in wild birds in South Korea and, this month, for the first time at a poultry farm. More than 11 million laying hens were culled last winter, driving egg prices higher, though prices have recently eased to around 7,000 won per 30 eggs; authorities are stepping up disinfection and limiting movement between farms to contain the new outbreak.
Further outbreaks and culling could reduce egg-laying capacity, with production taking about six months to recover and tightening egg supply. This could put upward pressure on egg prices, although the current outbreak affects only a small share of the national flock.
