The South African rand strengthened 0.8% against the US dollar over the week, with the dollar costing R16.50 on Friday, compared with R16.64 a week earlier. The rand reached R16.36 on Thursday before giving back part of its gains on Friday, while South African government bond yields also fell.
A stronger rand can lower the local-currency cost of imported feed and agricultural inputs, all else equal. The exchange-rate move is modest and does not establish a change in underlying commodity supply or demand.
