An analyst at Phoenix Agro said Ukrainian sunflower production is currently profitable for farmers only when the crop is exported, including to Bulgaria and Turkey. He said domestic prices do not cover average growing costs of UAH 15,000–16,000, while sunflower processors are earning stronger margins than farmers this season.
Export demand provides an outlet for Ukrainian sunflower that the domestic market does not, supporting farm returns where export access is available. Weak domestic economics may discourage planting or constrain future seed supply.
