The latest Commitments of Traders data showed speculative net short positions in the Brazilian real rising to 46,000 contracts from 32,900. The increase coincided with a 10.5% depreciation against the dollar over seven trading days, while Bank of America forecast the real could strengthen to 5.25 per dollar by year-end.
Heavier short positioning and recent depreciation reflect near-term bearish pressure on the real, which raises the local-currency cost of imported feed and inputs. The forecast recovery could reverse that effect if commodity trends support the currency.
