Cenovus Energy plans to close its Lloydminster-area ethanol plant on December 15, citing a poor economic outlook. The facility is a sales outlet for ethanol wheat and off-grade feed wheat produced in the area, while Cenovus’s other ethanol plant in Manitoba is expected to continue operating.
The closure removes a local buyer for ethanol and feed wheat, potentially leaving nearby producers with surplus grain and weakening local basis and prices. Reduced ethanol capacity also marginally lowers regional demand for wheat feedstock.
