Commercial fishermen from Maine and Virginia urged managers to keep Atlantic menhaden quotas unchanged for 2027–2029 after the coastwide catch limit was cut 20% for 2026. They say further reductions could hurt New England's lobster-bait supply and threaten jobs in Virginia's menhaden-processing fishery.
A maintained quota would preserve menhaden supply for bait and reduction uses, while additional cuts could tighten fish-derived feed ingredient availability and raise costs.
