USDA data showed 28,673 grain railcars moved in the United States in the week through October 24, down 1% from the previous week but 2% above the same period last year. Barge grain shipments fell 47% week over week and 68% year over year to 282,400 tonnes in the week through October 31, while 34 vessels loaded grain at Gulf terminals, up 10% year over year.
The sharp decline in barge movements may temporarily constrain grain flows through the Mississippi-Gulf export channel and support nearby freight costs, though the higher number of vessels loading at Gulf terminals points to continued export activity. The report gives no clear evidence of a broader change in grain supply or prices.
