Rice futures rose above $17.90 per hundredweight, their highest level since June 2024, and have gained more than 85% since the start of the year. A weak monsoon is expected to reduce India’s 2026/27 rice output by 7 million tonnes to 147 million tonnes, while flooding in Thailand has disrupted transport and raised concerns about planting delays and crop losses.
El Niño also adds uncertainty to production prospects across Asia, though new-crop arrivals are easing India’s domestic supply pressure in the near term.
Potentially lower output in India and weather-related crop and transport risks in Thailand could tighten exportable supply and support rice prices. Improving new-crop arrivals in India may provide some near-term relief.
After 179 past bullish weather events, Rough Rice moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (55% higher; middle half -1.4% to +2.5%), and +2.2% over 20.
