USDA data show fed-steer prices fell from about $258 per hundredweight in May to $221 in September, while average ground-beef retail prices remained near $6.75–$6.79 per pound. In August, the US expanded the lower-duty import quota for lean beef trimmings by 300,000 metric tons, but September retail prices showed only modest relief from August’s peak.
The larger import quota can add lean beef supply and put pressure on cattle prices, though the reported retail data suggest the added supply had so far brought consumers little relief. Lower selling prices against costs committed months earlier squeeze independent feeders.
