US whey protein prices have more than doubled as global demand has outpaced available supply. US dairy companies and cooperatives plan to invest about $11.2 billion across 50 processing facilities, including capacity for whey protein and other dairy products.
The investment could expand whey and dairy-product supply over time, but it is not an immediate fix for the current shortage. Persistent demand exceeding supply supports whey prices in the near term and may also support dairy-product values.
