Indonesia plans to require exporters to convert up to 100% of natural-resource export proceeds into rupiah, up from the current 50% limit. The change will take effect after a finance ministry regulation is revised, which the government expects to complete by the end of November; officials cited strong demand for rupiah, including for companies’ operating needs.
A higher mandatory conversion share would increase exporters’ demand for rupiah and could support the currency, while reducing their flexibility to hold export earnings in foreign currency.
